Before you begin

Decide whether this should be a professional move.

Professional help is especially worth considering for a large aquarium, saltwater or reef livestock, long travel, stairs, custom plumbing, heavy rockwork, valuable animals, or a narrow same-day restart window.

A six-part move plan

  1. 01

    Plan the destination

    Confirm the new stand, floor support, power, water access, temperature, route, parking, and the time available for the move.

  2. 02

    Prepare containers and supplies

    Use suitable livestock containers, separate equipment bins, labels, towels, nets, siphons, heaters or aeration as needed, and enough conditioned water.

  3. 03

    Protect the livestock

    Minimize handling and time out of the operating system. Keep temperature and oxygen in mind, and do not feed immediately before the move unless a professional advises otherwise.

  4. 04

    Drain and break down carefully

    Preserve useful filter media appropriately, keep weight out of the glass aquarium, and photograph plumbing and equipment before disconnecting it.

  5. 05

    Move the empty aquarium

    Support the tank correctly, protect seams and edges, and keep the aquarium level. Large tanks often require specialized lifting and transport planning.

  6. 06

    Reassemble and stabilize

    Set the tank level, reconnect equipment, add conditioned water, verify temperature and operation, acclimate livestock, and test closely after restart.

Questions to ask a moving provider

  • Who supplies the livestock containers, water, heaters, aeration, vehicle, and lifting equipment?
  • Does the quote include breakdown, transport, reassembly, cleanup, and follow-up?
  • How will fish, coral, plants, substrate, rock, and biological filter media be handled?
  • What needs to be ready at the destination before the crew arrives?
  • How are delays, equipment failures, livestock risk, and post-move problems handled?
